The Success

The millennium trilogy was written by the late Stieg Larsson and consists of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", "The Girl Who Played With Fire", and the last book in the series,"The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest". It has sold over 40 million copies and has been published in 44 countries. The first book in the series has broken sales records in almost every country and has sold 5 million copies in the U.S., and is also the best-selling ebook in history.

Three Swedish movies were produced from the story lines of the books and were international successes in Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the U.S.>

Hollywood Cashes In

If that success wasn't enough, now Hollywood is coming in with some big guns to produce a movie based on the first book in the series,"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo".

David Fincher will be the director. His most recent success was in directing,"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", which earned him an Oscar nomination for best director in 2008. He is known for directing dark crime thrillers such as Zodiac(2007) and Panic Room(2002). He should do well with this movie.

Daniel Craig is cast as Mikael Blomkvist, the journalist. He should bring a lot more grit and intensity to the role, than the Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist brought to the original Swedish film.

Robin Wright is cast as Erika Berger, Blomkvists publisher at Millennium magazine, and occasional lover. In the original movie, the chemistry between the two actors was lacking and almost seemed like an inconvenient aspect of the plot that could have been left out. Hopefully, Fincher will direct more fire between the two actors and add an emotional conflict between Berger and the main character Lisbeth Salander.

After a very extensive search, a virtually unknown twenty-five year old actor, Rooney Mara, has been cast as the movie's heroine. Her most recent project is starring in a David Fincher film called,"Social Networking", which is a film about the history of Facebook. While I think that Daniel Craig would be an improvement over Michael Nyqvist, it won't be that easy for me to believe that Rooney Mara will outperform Noomi Rapace's role as Lisbeth Salander in the original movie. Rapace brought a believable mysterious and laconic darkness to her role. There is one particularly dark scene in the movie and I felt that Rapace pulled it off brilliantly.

Should You Read The Books First Before The Movie

I've read all three books before watching all three Swedish movies. My opinion is that Stieg Larsson was a masterful story-teller that unfortunately left our world prematurely. I believe that the mind has such a powerful imagination and Larsson was able to take advantage of this in his writing. The world that I imagined in his books were far more intense than the movies. It is no accident that his books are shattering sales records around the world. In this case, I would recommend that you not spoil the experience of reading the book by watching the movie first!
